I asked my partner to put their phone away at dinner. They said I was being controlling.
We rarely get time together during the week, so we planned a dinner at home. My partner spent much of it scrolling and answering non-urgent messages.
I asked if we could both put our phones away until we finished eating. They said I was trying to control their free time. I wasn’t asking to see their messages; I just wanted us to be present.
Was the request reasonable, or should we have talked about this before dinner?
